Who’d have thought there were so many garage door options to choose from?
If your idea of a garage door extends as far as a traditional up and over (not that there’s anything wrong with those garage doors), then it’s time to expand your horizons.
These days, there are many types of garage doors which are all designed to suit different styles, tastes, and types of property. But, today, we’re going to focus on three which are definitely worth consideration if you’re a homeowner in need of a new – or your first – garage door.
Side hinged garage doors
Let’s start with the least obvious. It’s a safe bet that a side hinged garage door isn’t something you’ll have considered thus far.
Side hinged garage doors offer some superb benefits for specific homeowners. They are, as the name suggests, opened by swinging the door outwards, as you would a ‘regular’ door. This provides a huge opening and makes side hinged garage doors perfect if you’re always heading in and out of the garage on foot – maybe to access things you regularly need.
They can also be insulated if your garage is a workspace and windows can be fitted to allow light in. Just remember that side hinged garage doors take up space on your drive when open and might prove problematic if you don’t have a large enough drive.
Up and over
Let’s go back to where we started this blog.
Up and over garage doors remain one of the best choices for a great many homeowners. It’s why new home build companies still use them so often on their sites.
These garage doors are traditional, but they’re also highly cost effective, easy to operate, and just as easy to maintain.
If you’re looking for a quick, low-cost route to a new garage door, an up-and-over is still a brilliant choice. Just keep in mind that you’ll need some space in front of your garage when you open it, and the fact you’ll need roof space into which the door can retract.
Roller garage doors
Ever dreamt of driving up to your home, pressing a button and watching as the garage door effortlessly slides upwards out of sight, ready for you to drive in?
Roller garage doors are popular for a reason. And let’s not beat around the bush – it’s largely because they’re pretty cool. But they also offer so many benefits.
For starters, they’re compact and take up barely any space. This is true for your drive (they don’t protrude at all) and the internal space of the garage, too, because roller doors retract neatly into a small box above the opening.
Roller garage doors are also insulated by default and, just like any other garage door, can come in any number of colours. They’re a great option and not as expensive as you might think.
