What is the standard garage door size in the UK?

There is no single standard garage door size in the UK. There are a range of factors that can contribute to the size of a garage door. For example:

  • Do you need a single garage door or a double garage door?

  • What style of garage door do you need?

  • Do you need a domestic garage door or a commercial garage door?

  • How about an RV garage door?

The answer to all of these questions will play a role in the garage door size you need.

For this reason it is advised to consult a garage door expert. They can listen to all your requirements and recommend a suitable garage door size.

Single garage door dimensions

However, there are some garage door sizes more common than others. The most common single garage door sizes you’ll find at retailers include (opening width x opening height):

  • 7′ x 6’6”

  • 7′ x 7′

  • 7’6” x 7′

7ft is the traditional opening height, but more or less headspace may be required depending on your garage door style. Opening width may depend on the size of the vehicle you wish to get into your garage.

A garage door of seven or eight feet in height is suitable for:

  • A car

  • A van

  • An SUV

  • A small truck

Double garage door dimensions

If you have a particularly large/wide vehicle or plan on storing multiple vehicles, you may be better off choosing a double garage door.

The most common double garage door sizes you’ll find at retailers include (opening width x opening height):

  • 12′ x 7′

  • 14′ x 7′

  • 16′ x 7′

Double garage doors are suitable for:

  • Large vehicles

  • Houses with multiple vehicles

If you need to fit an RV in your garage, you’ll need a garage door span of 16ft in width and 8ft in height.

How to measure a garage door

Measure your garage door opening to identify which garage door size would fit with your current garage.

Step 1:

  • Measure the width between the right and left sides of the finished opening. Check for any irregularities.

Step 2:

  • Measure the distance between the bottom and the top of the finished opening. Check for any spots where the floor isn’t level.

Step 3:

  • Measure the width of the areas beside the openings.

Step 4:

  • Measure the area between the top of the opening and the lowest obstruction on the ceiling.

Step 5:

  • Measure the distance from the opening to the nearest obstruction at the rear of the garage.

Pass these measurements onto Horizons for advice and recommendations for your next garage door.
